Basics About Fluorite

Fluorite, also known as Fluorspar, is basically a mineral that is made up of the elements Calcium and Fluorine. The word “Fluorite” originates from the Latin root “fluo” which means “to flow”. It was used before as a flux to decrease the viscosity of slags from iron smelting. It melts at a temperature of 1360°C and is a colorful halide mineral both in visible and ultraviolet light. Known as the most colorful mineral in the world, it comes in a wide array of colors: from deep purple to sky blue, sea green to bright yellow. The different colors are determined by several factors, such as: (1) impurities or when other elements substitute for Calcium in the crystalline structure, (2) exposure to radiation, and (3) the size of the color centers. In its purest form, with a chemical formula of CF2, this mineral is crystal clear. Some can be translucent, while others –transparent. But some forms of Fluorite even glow in the dark!

When used industrially, it is more common to refer to it by using the name “Fluorspar”, which was coined by a German scientist. This comes from the German word “Flussespar” whose root words literally mean stream and non-metallic mineral or stone. Native Americans were believed to have used Fluorite when carving artifacts. But for centuries, it has been used as an excellent source of fluoride for manufacturing hydrofluoric acid – also used for the production of other Fluorine containing chemicals such as: uranium fuel for nuclear reactors, rocket fuel, and metal plating. Aside from serving as flux, this mineral is also used for production of glass, enamel glazes, ceramics, and Portland cement. Furthermore, this mineral can also yield products of both organic (plastics, refrigerants, non-stick coatings, lubricants, stain repellents, dyes, cleaning solvents, foaming agents, medicines and anesthetics) and inorganic fluoride (toothpastes and concrete hardeners). Also, optically clear Fluorite is used to make lenses for microscopes and telescopes. In addition to this mineral’s relevant role industrially, Fluorite is also used for various ornamental and decorative purposes. It can be made into beads and is also used to make jewellery. However, the relative softness of this semi-precious stone makes it somewhat less ideal for this purpose.

These glass-like minerals are usually found filling the veins that run through rocks. They 12751-02also exist as flat bands or parallel layers to the various bedding planes in sedimentary rocks. One of the prettiest forms of this rock is when it forms as clusters of cubic crystals. It is found widely all over the world, in countries like: China, Mexico, Kenya, Germany, Austria, and South Africa. The reserves for this mineral are estimated to be at 230 million tons, with the largest deposits found in South Africa.

The crystal surface of Fluorite can readily reflect light, making possible the polishing of this to a high luster. It is dense, relatively heavy, brittle but relatively soft (garnering 4 on Moh’s hardness scale) and can be damaged when hit with harder materials. If this was indeed made into jewelry, extra care must be done to avoid damage to the mineral. Due to the aforementioned properties, this mineral is best for minimally shaped and solid designs of jewellery and ornaments.
